BJJ GI | Jiu Jitsu Gi| BUYER'S GUIDE - HABROK

Type of Weaves In BJJ GI’s – Why you should buy Habrok BJJ Gi.

The 4 Most Common BJJ Gi Weaves and Which BJJ Gi Weave is Best?

You can tell a lot about a fabric when you know the construction of the weave used to construct it. BJJ gis are most commonly identified by their weight in grams, which is the weight of the fabric in grams per square meter (gsm). Fabric weight is an essential indicator of the overall quality of the knit and often reflects the strength, quality and durability of a fabric.

However, fabric weight alone does not tell the full story of a fabric's qualities; both how a fabric is woven and how the fabric is cured play a crucial role in determining how your gi will wear.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi

Also known as a BJJ Gi, Jiu Jitsu Kimono, etc. The word 'gi' is derived from the Japanese words 'keikogi' or 'dogi', which means "uniform for training". As such there are many types of gis out there for all the different martial arts that require this type of uniform.

Type of BJJ Gi Weaves: What is BJJ GI Made off?

What is the best BJJ GI?

Single Weave:

Traditionally most Gi manufacturers use single weave since it’s the cheapest and thus most cost effective weave to produce in bulk. These lightweight gis are cheap but tend not to last very long.

Pearl Weave:

Pearl weave is the most common family of weave used for BJJ Gis. It is strong and very durable.  We use this technology in 3 categories

Leve Series:

The Leve series is our lightest weave at 350gsm. This breathable gi offers tremendous comfort and great durability.

Tatica Series

Our Tatica lightweight pearl weave is an excellent choice for competitions. At 450gsm this weave offers unparalleled strength without compromising on weight.

Pugnator Series:

The Pugnator series uses our Tatica Pearl Weave in combination with our CoolPearl liner. The combination results in a lightweight gi that offers uncompromising comfort. The Pugnator series are available with a variety of visually striking illustrations permanently applied using sublimation technology.

Dragon Weave

This exclusive weave is still being developed. Check back later for updates!

Double Weave

In years past the double weave was the only real alternative to a single weave. These fabrics typically start around 700gsm and are strong, heavy, and offer poor breathability. Modern pearl weaves offer most of the benefits of double weaves but without the additional bulk and discomfort.

Rip-Stop Weave

Ripstop is the strongest and most durable fabric available for BJJ Gi pants. This fabric excels at is exactly what its name suggests: it prevents rips and tears!

BJJ GI Fabric Processing: What is Grey Fabric?

There is more to the process of producing fabric than the weight and the weave.  Before cloth goes through a curing process it is known as “grey fabric,” or raw fabric. The majority of BJJ Gis, regardless of brand, do not go through a curing process, besides bleaching, before being delivered to the consumer.

If you've ever wondered why your expensive, brand new Gi just shrunk, well it’s most likely due to the fabric having been delivered to you as unfinished “grey fabric!”

At Habrok, our Gi’s goes through additional steps to ensure our final fabric is fully cured, a process called sanforization. This process means each Gi is both pre-shrunk and bleached twice before going through our exclusive treatment process that we have mastered over the course of time.

Simply put weight and weave only tell part of the story - the processing that grey fabric goes through ultimately dictates the overall strength, durability, shrinkage, and quality of the Gi.

BJJ GI Color: Does BJJ GI Color Matters?

You can buy a GI in any color these days. At Habrok, we take pride in innovating our dyeing process to bring our customers the latest trends.

The traditional colors are "White, Royal Blue & Black" Please keep in mind if you are competing at IBJJF tournaments, only traditional colors are allowed.

BJJ GI Maintenance

Due to the nature of grappling and the diseases that can come from close contact between fighters. The Gi typically needs to be washed after every class.

Our Gi's are made with 100% cotton (PreShrunk Twice), must be washed in cold water and air dry to avoid shrinkage.

Habrok uses Anti - Bacterial & Anti - Odor technology for all our Gi's.

BJJ GI Size & Fit

BJJ Gi sizes vary from brand to brand. Most brands outsource their production and frequently do not incorporate their own sizing; they depend on the factory they’ve outsourced their production to provide their template and sizing..

However, Habrok gis use our "Ergonomic Fit" sizing, meaning your new gi will fit perfectly and provide the ultimate rolling experience.

3 - Weight : What is GSM in BJJ GI?

The most important aspect of the Gi is the weave. However at Habrok, our years of developing and perfecting the weaves have lead to to believe that the most crucial part of the material is not just the weave. Its the process through which the Fabric is processed.

Weight - Light weight Gi's are excellent for for training in hot weather conditions. Light weight Gi's are prefer choice of many pro athletes now in competition.

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BJJ GI SIZE FOR YOU

The most important part about choosing the Gi is finding the fit that suites your body and rolling style. Keeping in mind how the weight & weave effects the over all fit. Choosing the Gi that is constructed with ergonomics of human body and the sport is essential for peak performance and comfort. Having the right fit comes handy when performing essential chokes, using your Gi as an extension to submit your opponent.

Having the right length in the arms and legs is also an important aspect to keep in mind. Length is imperative when choosing the fit, too long or too short is considered illegal as per IBJJF guidelines.

So how do you pick the right size? Well that is why our Jiu Jitsu Gi's are designed for modern BJJ athletes and offer a "modern fit" perfect for training and competitions. Unlike older cuts they are neither baggy nor loose.

Habrok offers a wide range of sizes ranging from A00 to A5, plus a variety of sizes for those with long limbs (L), stout bodies (H), and women (F).
